WESTERNPORT, Md. (AP) -- Officials are urging caution on the Potomac River after heavy rain in western Maryland caused some minor flooding and street damage.
The Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin said in a statement Friday that water levels in the upper Potomac have spiked from Cumberland to Paw Paw, West Virginia. The agency says the tidal Potomac could see some shoreline flooding this weekend as the water moves downstream.
The Cumberland Times-News reportsthat Westernport firefighters worked overnight to pump water from basements and clear roadways flooded by nearly 2 inches of rain.
The newspaper reports that a mudslide blocked three roads, and that sinkholes buckled the surfaces of two more streets.
