ODENTON, Md. — WMAR-2 News is committed to improving the lives of Veterans in Maryland by shining a light on their stories, struggles and triumphs. Every week a local veteran will be featured in our Veteran Spotlight contest.
This week's nominee is Wilmer Lee Gardner of Odenton. Gardner, who was a Staff Sergeant and Left Waist Gunner on a B-17, served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II.
He was in the 334th squadron, 95th bomb group, based in Horham, England and received the distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters.
After the war, Gardner worked for Westinghouse in Linthicum and also raised brood mares in Odenton.
He is a loving husband of 71 years and a proud father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Gardner is currently missing his friends at Chic-fil-A in Severn, which is where he spent every morning before the coronavirus outbreak.
