HARFORD COUNTY, Md. — Today, the real-life subject of the movie "Beautiful Boy" brought his story of addiction and recovery to Harford County.

Nic Sheff was the keynote speaker at Harford County's 15th Annual Symposium on Addiction & Recovery. Sheff is a recovering addict, author and subject of the movie, "Beautiful Boy", starring Timothee Chalamet and Steve Carell.

Today, Sheff shared his struggle with substance abuse disorder, his inspiring journey to recovery and the impact of his addiction on his family.

"Once I accepted the fact that I have a disease and that addiction is a disease, it's a brain disease and the only way for me to ever live a full life is to treat it as a disease, that was really when things started to change for me," said Sheff. "I was able to get the help that I needed and do the things that were suggested of me to do."

Sheff says he appreciates the little things in life, like walking his dog, going surfing or going out for dinner.

He has been sober for nine years.
