University of Maryland student arrested after hate bias incident

A University of Maryland student was arrested and charged after a hate bias incident occurred.

On December 12, 2019, around 11:30 a.m., UMPD was notified of a hate bias incident that occurred on December 10, 2019, around 8:18 p.m. A female UMD student reported to police that while at McKeldin Library, she received anti-Semitic messages on her cell phone from a person she did not know.

After investigating, a detective was able to identify the suspect, Muqarrab Ahmed Abdullah, 24, who allegedly sent multiple messages to the victim because of her religious beliefs.

On February 24, 2020, an arrest warrant was issued for the suspect. Abdullah is charged with the following:

CR 3-805 ((b)(1)) Electronic Communication Harassment

CR 3-804 ((a)(2)) Telephone Misuse: Repeat Calls

CR 10-304 (1) Race/Religion Crime: Person/Group

Electronic Communication Harassment against the victim because of the victim’s religious beliefs.

On Friday, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office served the arrest warrant.
