ELLICOTT CITY, Md. — Howard County on Wednesday announced they would distribute some of their share of federal CARES Act funding to subsidize a new childcare program, run by the Department of Parks and Recreation.
It's called RecZone, and it's for school students from any county in grades K through 5.
The funding will reduce weekly costs to $219 for kids attending from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and $185 for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Though discounted rates will be offered starting Wednesday, the first official day of the program will be September 8 with the last day being December 31.
Parents who already registered their kids will receive a credit to their account making up the difference in pricing.
RecZone is expected to be offered at 16 different public elementary schools throughout Howard County.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, space is limited to about 416 kids.
The county says each school will have two separate groups of up to 13 children enrolled at a time. Two staff members will monitor each group.
Students attending RecZone can get help with virtual learning and participate in crafts, educational activities, cultural theme days, physical activities, playtime outside, and games.
