WESTMINSTER, MD-- — Community, mobile, and pop-up vaccine clinics are the new key to vaccinating Maryland. One of those helped get roughly 1,100 shots into the arms of teens in Carroll County.
Wednesday Maryland Secretary of Health Dennis Schrader toured a site at Westminster Town Hall exclusively for teens aged 12-17.
He said sites like this one are key, and that state mass vaccination sites will begin winding down and eventually closing sooner rather than later.
“When we hit a certain inflection point, we'll start winding them down but it'll probably be over the next few weeks," said Shrader. “Some are still very actively doing very high volume. But we're going to do that systematically over the next several weeks while we ramp up more community-based sites.”
He added the state is working closely with local health departments to get these community clinics set up.
He also said a focus of the state currently is to get the remainder of the state’s 65+ population vaccinated. 85% have been vaccinated so far.
The state is in the process of reaching out to the remaining 13%-- about 124,000 people—so they too can get vaccinated.
