WMAR-2 News is committed to improving the lives of Veterans in Maryland by giving light to their stories, struggles and triumphs. Every week a local veteran will be featured in our Veteran Spotlight contest.

This week we are honoring Betty Kruger of Bel Air, who served in the Army Nurse Corps for two decades and began her career at Walter Reed Medical Center. She was then assigned to an allied hospital in Belgium.

Kruger later served during the Vietnam War and, while in the 101st Airborne Division, she took care of the most critically injured soldiers and even accompanied them on helicopter rides to hospital ships in the China Sea.

Her career took her to Fort Bragg in North Carolina to Iran at the time of revolution. She was evacuated and continued serving at Fort Campbell, Letterman Hospital and at Fort Carson where she ultimately retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.

Kruger now volunteers at VA hospitals. She is also active with catholic war veterans and is the President of her auxiliary.

She turned 90 years old last Sunday and we'd like to wish you a happy belated birthday. Thank you for your dedication to our country.
