Businesses left with thousands of dollars in damage after devastating flooding

Flooding has taken a major toll on Frederick County. Roads were left impassable, 55 people needed to be rescued from the rising waters and dozens of businesses have to close down to repair.

Two Jefferson neighbors were left with thousands of dollars in damage after the Catoctin Creek jumped its banks Tuesday night.

"It's terrible," John Vanfleet said.

"It's devastating. I'm still in shock," Jeffrey Golden said.

Golden has owned Golden Clippers Landscaping off Jefferson Pike for 20 years. Last night, he watched most of it just wash away.

"I ran outside and I got two trucks out of the way but it was too late. All the other trucks were gone," Golden said. "All three of my boats are gone. It took everything. It's probably $200,000 worth of damage done and nothing I can do about it."

But what can be done is try to secure what's left before the next round of rain. He was out working for most of Wednesday to prepare.

"You just hope for the best and hopefully this doesn't happen again," Golden said.

Across the street, Vanfleet assessed the damage to the basement of Brookside Inn. The restaurant has been in his family for three generations and the basement was completely ruined.

"Those are family heirlooms. That was my grandmother's from years ago, and it's all destroyed," Vanfleet said.

Now the restaurant is closed until further notice.

"Until we can clean the mess up because we have no running water. The flood took all the water systems out," Golden said.

But they've been there for 80 years, so it's not a question of if they will reopen, but when.

"We've got to. There's no doubt. I'm not giving up," Golden said.

The Red Cross has already helped multiple families who fell victim to the flooding and expects to hear from more as the rain continues.
