BALTIMORE — Thanks to the help of our viewers, WMAR-2 News was able to raise over $79,000 to help support the Maryland Food Bank.
You, our viewers, raised a total of $51,791 for our Virtual Food Drive. In just one week, during our Food Bank Blitz, you helped us raise over $19,000. WMAR matched this amount with $12,000 along with a $1,000 donation from The Scripps Howard Foundation.
On top of your donations, Corporate Office Properties Trust (COPT) donated and additional $15,000
Here are some facts about the Maryland Food Bank:
- From March 1 to April 30, the Maryland Food Bank distributed close to 8.1 million pounds of food vs. 4.9 million pounds distributed during the same two-month period last year (64% increase).
- the Maryland Food Bank distributed roughly 4.4 million pounds of food in April 2020 vs. 2.4 million pounds of food in April 2019 (82% increase)
- In April 2020, the Maryland Food Bank spent nearly $1.8 million to purchase food, compared to $426,000 in April 2019 (321% increase)
